Abstract (English):Over the past ten years, the universities of teacher education in Switzerland have built up remarkable research competence, quality, and a considerable stock of publications. However, a personal retrospective on the formative years of the Swiss universities of teacher education from an internal perspective leads to the following two conclusions: on the one hand, professional scientific research is conducted. This research supports an education of teaching professionals which focuses on the acquisition of professional competences and seeks to guarantee performance. Research and scientifically based development, evaluation and consulting complement each other in their specific tasks and quality criteria. These elements of the services of the Swiss universities of teacher education are not only beneficial to the education of teaching professionals, but can also benefit from it vice versa. On the other hand, further important efforts are still necessary: the linkage between scientific research and teaching still proves to be difficult. Resources for scientific work on pressing questions regarding formation, education and the professional education of teaching staff are scarce. This scarcity is partially due to the fact that the universities of teacher education have not yet managed to approximate their resources for scientific research to the corresponding share of universities and universities of applied sciences. It needs to be ensured with respect to staff, curricula as well as the entire organization of universities of teacher education that scientific research can exist as such, without neglecting competence-oriented teaching or endangering the close cooperation with schools.
