Abstract (English):During the era of the bourgeois revolution, the conceptualization of the relation between the state and education moved between the two extremes of the revolutionary educational state, on the one hand, and the radical-liberalist utopia of the abolition of state-organized education, on the other. The liberalist utopia derived from the opposition to absolutism and the revolutionary concept of the educational state differed from the absolutist educational state in that it was designed as interim, i.e., in that it aimed at its own nullification. Condorcet's model mediates between these extremes; in some respects it anticipates elements of the concept of the democratic welfare state. The different variants and models of this conceptualization of the relation between the state and education are illustrated by examples from the educational-theoretical discourse in both France and Germany.
