Abstract (English):German foundations have entered uncharted territory in the last few years with special scholarship programs that support students in teacher education. The foundations claim to promote high-performing and high socially involved students in teacher education and to qualify them in addition to the regular teacher training at university. Apart from internal evaluations of the different foundations, the topic of foundation programs for students in teacher education has not yet been recognized neither in the scientific discourse on teacher education nor as its own research field. The paper at hand attempts to give an overview about this topic and to start the discussion of this research field. The paper first describes the foundations' goals to promote students in teacher education and outlines the thereby created teacher profiles. Subsequently, the question of which competences are conveyed to the students in teacher education through the scholarship programs as well as the question which criteria are necessary in the selection process of these students for the scholarship programs is discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion about research perspectives for the empirical research on teacher education in the field of foundation programs that promote students in teacher education.
