Abstract (English):On the basis of an analysis of the official school statistics the authors show that, in the German educational system, boys are at a disadvantage with girls: they often leave secondary school without a final degree or they merely complete the non-selective branch of lower secondary school. The completion of the selective middle school (“Realschule”) and academic standards required for university entrance are obtained less often. Furthermore, it is shown that the disadvantages of boys are consistent throughout all Laender; however, there are strong variations as to the extent of these disadvantages. Of great impact on the disadvantages of boys in the German educational system are the proportion of male elementary school teachers and the unemployment rate: the smaller the proportion of male elementary school teachers and the higher the rate of unemployment, the lower the achievement of boys as compared to girls with regard to their secondary school degrees.
