Abstract (English):This article investigates the role of education and culture. It argues that education has to be seen as an important human resource which goes beyond quantification, international competitiveness and its meaning of human capital. Education and culture are not only a guarantee for economic success, but also a potentiality for the individual to transgress limits: because of being available at any time, education and culture allow to transcend the presence. At the same time they are mediums for fortification: by incorporating collective forms of culture they establish and fortify feelings of community. This will be demonstrated by analysing some reports of former prisoners in German concentration camps. Education and culture were their resources to survive, they helped them to establish a sense of identity and human dignity. (DIPF/Orig.)
