Abstract (German): | Die Autorin untersucht, welche Vorstellungen sich jugendliche Schüler*innen vom Prozess des Komponierens machen. Abstract (English): | In the German music educational discourse, the increase of publications on composition in music lessons has produced a variety of terms which are used to circumscribe the concept of composition or attempt to define it more broadly. These substitute terms are employed mainly to avoid connotations of composition as the product of an ingenious mind, which in turn might lead to certain narrow conceptions of the term. With regard to composing in school, the question arises whether the term ‘composition’ evokes similar connotations in pupils as are implied in music education research. This article presents selected results from a broader study by focusing on reconstructing pupils’ conceptions about composition and interpreting them regarding the implied genius connotation. This is achieved using the theory of experience-based understanding and systematic metaphor analysis as a method of qualitative research, both of which are employed in music education research for the first time.
