Abstract (English):The article is about the so-called Bologna-process and the historically unprecedented diffusion, fuelled by this process, of an abstract model for the Europe-wide restructuring and harmonization of Higher Education studies and degrees. This process is understood as a particular instance of much wider processes of ongoing world-level interconnection and standardization in education. The article therefore draws on insight and conceptual tools produced by different stands of world-systems analysis, and particularly on sociological neo-institutionalism. In so doing, it links up with the theoretical perspectives of a strand of research that is rooted in both the sociology of organizations and the sociology of knowledge, and wich has, more than any other strand, investigated, and translated into elaborate models, what might be called the "social construction of, world culture'". In the light of analytical concepts such as "diffusion", "imagined model", or "rationalized myth", and drawing on research findings showing the growing importance of international organizations - of IGOs as much as of INGOs - , the article attempts to develop the outline for a conceptually based explanation both of the emergence and the dynamics of the Bologna-process.
