Abstract (English):With reference to the theory of the self-determination of motivation, the authors analyse in how far selected conditions of home background influence the development of learning motivation, of interest in specific school subjects, and of school achievement. 118 pupils from elementary schools were questioned as to their intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivational orientation, their subject-related interests, and the degree of parental behavior promoting autonomy. Furthermore, data on parents' educational background and their view of control vs. autonomy in education was collected. Results show that both the parents' educational status and the degree of child-perceived parental promotion of autonomy reveal a negative relation with extrinsic forms of motivation. On the basis of these findings, it is assumed that a strong support of autonomy on the part of the parents helps children to better overcome extrinsic forms of regulation in this age group, thus indirectly assisting the development of intrinsic motivation.
