(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (English):In this empirical study graphic representations were varied along the dimensions "elaborateness" and "structuredness" and examined as to their suitability for knowledge acquisition in primary grades. The theoretical framework is provided by the concept of mental models which seems suited for a clarification of the relation between external presentation and internal representation of knowledge. The propositions are linked with psychological reflections on the format and the processes of both the construction and the reconstruction of internal representations. Since a complete randomization of the students was impossible reading ability was included as a variable in group formation. The regression-analytical evaluation showed that students who learned with both highly elaborated and highly structured pictures performed best. For a more detailed Interpretation qualitative results of individual students were furthermore evaluated by means of a specific method of the graphic representation of thinking processes.
