Abstract (English):The question is raised how courses in mathematics in upper secondary school can be designed in such a way that the requirements of an indepth general education and the guarantee of a general qualification for academic education are met more successfully. The theoretical framework for orientation is provided by a concept of general education developed by the author, which allows [systematizing] future problems and questions of evaluation. Selected research results concerning the preconditions and the effects of school instruction in mathematics and relating to the need for mathematical knowledge in everyday professional and private life are discussed. Focal points of a necessary reform are put forward and the author then sketches a scenario for a both subject-related and organizational remodeling of mathematics in Upper secondary school which, among other things, aims at a clearer differentiation between basic courses and advanced courses, also with regard to the subject-related systematics prevailing in the latter.
