Abstract (English):The current research on right wing extremism is characterized by a plurality of theoretical approaches. Dominant are three perspectives: the first underlines effects of modernization, the second focuses on economic effects of relative deprivation and the third concentrates on socialization effects. By contrast, what is missing in current research is an empirical comparison of the explanatory power of these approaches. The present study presents such an empirical comparison of the three above mentioned theoretical approaches. A further aspect of the empirical analysis is the question whether different mechanisms generate right-wing orientation in East and West Germany. Empirical basis of the study is a representative sample of 673 "young adults“ at the age of l8 to 29 from the German General Social Survey (ALLBUS) 1996. (DIPF/Orig.)
