Abstract (English):The author presents results of a special statistical evaluation of the family surveys conducted in West Germany in 1988, and in East Germany, in 1990. The empirical analysis pursues two interdependent objectives. In a first step, the author describes the differences in standard parent-child- relationships (legitimate descent, living with both full parents) and all forms of deviating parent-child-relationships: 81% of all West-German and 65% East-German children live in standard parent-child-relationships until they are of age, the rest live almost exclusively in household associations with their mother (with varying ways of life). He then goes on to define the determinants of the regional and socio-structural differentiation in these parent-child-relationships. An important result is that differences between East and West Germany are only partly due to system-related differences in the incentive systems of the social policies; of greater impact are, besides the atmosphere within the family, the normative-cultural milieus specific to the different regions.
