Abstract (English):‘Space’ has been a very relevant category of thinking and research for the last 20 years through the “spatial turn” in the cultural and social sciences. Thus, it is surprising that music education has not taken on much of the ideas of a “spatial turn” yet. So, this contribution aims at establishing some basic thoughts on music and space in music education with the help of sociological theory. Martina Löw’s (2000) relational concept of space serves as the background for considerations of what such a theory of space may mean for music education, and what it could be used for. Therefore, basic constructs of Löw’s relational concept of space are introduced and discussed – spacing, synthesis, atmosphere are among the most relevant terms. Then, this contribution focuses on aspects of power and the negotiation of power (“spatial politics”) within the social and cultural production of space involving music. It tries to help bridge the theoretical gap between theories of space and of power relations for music education. In the last part, ideas from social pedagogy regarding the orientation toward the production of space within local communities (“Sozialraumorientierung”) are applied to the field of music education, and some proposals are made for further research and the generation of theory in this area of study.
