Abstract (English):The motives guiding career choices fundamentally influence not only enrolment for teacher training and entry into the profession, but also the development of professional competencies and thus professional success. This article examines pre-service teachers’ motives for study and career choice, possible changes of these motives in the course of initial teacher training, and the relations between motives and professional knowledge in the domain of mathematics education. The sample comprises 1394 students studying at universities of teacher education in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, who are prepared for teaching at either primary or secondary level schools. Using latent profile analysis, different structures of motives for study and career choice could be identified. On this basis, the participants can be assigned to one of three distinct profiles: «Idealism», «Confident Pragmatism» and «Realism». The profiles differ not only in the pre-service teachers’ motives, but also in terms of the type of academic qualification at entry, the choice of department (primary versus secondary education), and mathematical content knowledge.
