(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (English):The report of the National Commission on Excellence in Education, „A Nation at Risk" (1983), summarily evaluates the quality of schooling in America. The pamphlet stimulated a nationwide intensive discussion about the topics, which had already been addressed in a number of studies. The article presents results from three scholarly studies (Boyer, Coleman, Goodlad) selected from among the more than fifteen reports published around 1983. Some of these were primarily motivated by political considerations. The discussion of these documents focusses on the information they provide with regard to the relation between school and society in the USA. Particularly instructive - especially in view of recent discussions about school reform in West Germany - is a more precise consideration of differences in emphasis in the critique of schooling and in the proposals for improvement. The antagonism between two fundamental aims of schooling in the USA, i. e., of achieving both excellence and equality, seems to be the pivotal point of the recent debate. (DIPF/Orig.)
