(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (English):Seventy-two 5-, 6- and 7-year-old boys and girls participated in an experiment which aimed at enhancing their giving and helping behavior. Children in the experimental group were told stories in which the hero meets secondary characters who are in need and acts prosocially towards them. They were then asked to discuss the stories mainly according to empathy inducing techniques. Children in the control group were told stories without prosocial content and had to discuss them. It appeared from the outcome-oriented part of the study that the treatment was effective for children's giving behavior, but not for their helping behavior. In order to predict outcome variables from the process variables, children's discussions were scrutinized by content analysis and several process variables were designed. Prosocial moral reasoning conceptualized within the cognitive-developmental framework was the best predictor of the children's giving and helping behavior. Educational implications of the experiment are presented. (DIPF/Orig.)
