Abstract (English):The strong scientific and political interest which is currently shown with regard to issues of early childhood education in the Federal Republic of Germany has a predecessor dating back to the 1960s and 70s. On the basis of content-analytical methods, the author shows how intense the research debate on early childhood education had been during that phase and draws a connection to historical findings on the education-political optimism of that time. In a final part, he investigates reasons for the end of the "early- educational euphoria" around the mid-70s. As possible explanations he identifies perceived failures within the academic discipline, resistance by employees and sponsors of day-care institutions as well as a feeling of resignation among education-political actors.
