Abstract (English):This article examines the self-conception of basic education in Austria from the perspective of plurilingualism research and takes the point of view of migration education. It understands plurilingualism not only at the level of language competence but also factors in social and societal dimensions of language. Today German is being exploited more and more as a social exclusion criterion on which access to work, education or a chance at life in Austria all depend. In academic discourse, on the other hand, the positive influence of plurilingualism on the process of learning is increasingly stressed. What significance does plurilingualism actually have in basic education? Is there any space for it in basic education courses, which are predominantly offered in German, the language of the majority? The article gets to the bottom of these and other questions based on a systematic and critical reading of “Prinzipien und Richtlinien für Basisbildungsangebote” (Principles and Guidelines for Basic Education Offerings, 2017). In addition, the article provides a survey of materials and methods for cultivating plurilingualism in basic education courses. Its main premise is knowledge of the power of language and plurilingualism; its goal is to provide learners with ways to invest in their own linguisticality – and thus their individual language agency.
