Abstract (English):On the basis of selected results of a study on the self-perception of students attending lower secondary school in the southern regions of Lower Saxony, the authors substantiate the thesis that adolescents taking on the socially discredited status of lower secondary education are forced into a social role in which they learn above all to assert and protect their personal integrity against derogatory prejudices. Instead of addressing their educational career with inquisitiveness and looking at it as a path towards valuable participation in social life, they find their school performance questioned right from the start. They do not even trust their own learning success because they feel they are being looked at as socially declassified losers of the educational system. Experiencing competency is something quite different. It is not lower secondary school itself as an educational institution, but rather the status of lower secondary student that constitutes a biographically quite powerful risk factor generating learning effects with regard to socialization that can hardly be the aim of either educational policy or pedagogical action.
