Abstract (English): | Within the context of educational discrimination, schools located in urban segregated areas have been brought into focus during the last decade. Due to their location their heterogeneous student body consists of largely disadvantaged pupils. Taking this into consideration, schools facing challenging circumstances constitute an important field of discourse within school effectiveness research as well as school development research. Therefore, the following article follows up both lines of research, and aims at pointing towards a systematic description of contextual factors and highlighting particular problems of schooling in urban segregated areas. This will be shown by tracing back on orientations with a guiding effect to the pedagogical and educational strategies of the teaching staff in two schools located in areas most affected by deprivation and remarkably high inequality in two large German cities. The article recounts from contrasting case studies which are based on documentary reconstructions and which were realized in the course of a project from the funding line "governance within the educational system", funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research.
