Abstract (English):The article discusses the significance of a biographical orientation in social work and, based on material derived from student research, shows how such an orientation can be developed in the process of professionalization. The author discusses by reference to two student case studies how processes and problems of professional action can become the subject of reconstructive research and self-reflection carried out by (future) practitioners themselves and how thus the focus is directed towards an aspect essential to social work: the reflective and genuine interest in the life history of another person. With reference to Mary Richmond, an early protagonist of social work, conditions of and obstacles in the development of a reconstructive and biographical orientation are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)
