Klasse zusammen. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (English):The significance of phonological awareness and letter knowledge for early reading has been proven empirically for English as well as German. The role of vocabulary, however, has so far hardly ever been examined although various studies assume a connection. The project Vocabulary and Word Reading. Acquisition in the Early School Years analyses the correlations between vocabulary and word reading systematically for the first time: Do vocabulary skills support the acquisition of early reading skills with children in their early school years? What role do vocabulary breadth and organisation play? Results are presented for the correlations of early reading, vocabulary and precursory skills at school entry as well as longitudinally until the beginning of the 2nd grade of primary school. The findings are based on data of 130 Swiss children with Swiss German as their first language. Correlation analyses shed light on connections in a cross-sectional perspective, path models provide causal explanations of the development over a length of time. There is no evidence of a direct connection of vocabulary and word reading in a longitudinal perspective. Vocabulary breadth has an indirect effect on word reading, by developing phonological awareness. Vocabulary breadth is associated with decoding skills cross-sectionally at the beginning of 2nd grade, but is largely independent of recoding skills. (DIPF/Orig.)
