Abstract (English):The vocational education and training system in Austria has undergone great changes in the past few years: In addition to its core, vocational education and training in the schools (BMS and BHS) and the dual vocational training system (apprenticeship), there are more and more offerings aimed at adults. Employment is interrupted or reduced in favour of a new educational phase (keyword: multiple qualifications). Thus vocational education and training is becoming an important area of activity for adult education institutions as well. However, the entire educational system is also changing: Whereas its primary role used to be to prepare people to work during a specific chapter in their lives, it now accompanies them throughout their entire lives. The authors of this article argue that these changes have not been sufficiently considered in public debates, the theoretical discourse and the generally accepted ways in which vocational education and training are presented and perceived. They propose to present vocational education and training in a way that underscores how adults in vocational education and training are not a fringe group and aim to raise awareness of how the increasing number of these adults expresses a general change in the educational system.
