(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (English):What understanding of freedom does a modern theory of (adult) education need in order to formulate its significance for our society? The author of this article searches for a term for freedom that is able to take up and represent the special features of adult education and finds it in Hanna Arendt‘s “natality”. It contains an understanding of freedom focused on the human ability to start anew. What Arendt meant for the political arena can be successfully transferred to educational theory: normative uncertainty and being open-ended in time, many repetitions over the course of a biography, interacting with other people. Argued with Arendt‘s concept of natality, lifelong access to educational opportunities is not only desirable; it is indeed an expression of our human right to freedom. (DIPF/Orig.)
