Abstract (Englisch):The education systems of most ex-colonial countries are typically seen as a result of European (colonial as well as missionary) agency and are thus considered - for better or for worse - as a 'colonial legacy'. The author challenges this view by focusing historical developments that do not fit into this view. Reference is made to examples from Africa and elsewhere that are situated before and beyond colonialism which prove indigenous vs. European initiatives, incongruence between colonial and missionary concepts, and several African advocates and initiatives venturing for self-directed modern education. The author posits that the notion of universalisation of ideas and models of schooling in the era of the Modern World System is better suited to explain the spread of modern type school systems around the world than the idea of education as a (mere) colonal heritage.
