| Abstract (Englisch): | Damascus University (Arabic: جامعة دمشق), established in 1923, is the oldest and largest public research university in Syria, located in the capital city of Damascus. This article provides a comprehensive examination of its historical evolution, institutional structure, academic programs, and contemporary challenges. Originally founded through the merger of a Medical School (1903) and an Institute of Law (1913), the university has played a pivotal role in higher education in the Arab world. Despite significant disruptions caused by the Syrian civil war, the university has maintained its academic operations and continues to be a central institution for knowledge production and dissemination in the region. This article analyzes its organizational framework, including its faculties, higher institutes, and specialized centers, and assesses its current standing in international rankings. The study concludes by reflecting on the university's resilience and its critical importance for the future of Syria's educational and social reconstruction. (DIPF/Orig.) |
