Abstract (German):Im 19. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (English):The 19th century witnessed an awakening of Protestantism. Characteristic of this revival movements is the emphasis on God’s sovereignty and man’s depravity. We analyze the beginnings of the awakening in the Netherlands by means of a booklet, written by a missionary, and the many reactions which it caused. The flood disaster which hit the North Sea coast in February 1825 is described in this booklet as a punishment of God, viz. as a punishment for the many sins of the ‘enlightened’ Dutch people. According to the author, only humbleness would be able to ward off this divine wrath. The reconstruction of this discourse allows an analysis of the cultural and religious value patterns which developed during the initial phase of the revival movement and which had a fundamental impact on the emergence of the ‘pillarized’ structure of Dutch society after ca. 1830. It allows an analysis of the educational relation between religion and world. (DIPF/Orig.)
