Abstract (Englisch):The author inquires into the intentions of political education and into the legitimization strategies of civic education as illustrated by the school subject Social Studies, which constitutes the central subject of political education in Thuringia. The curricular development in Thuringia offers – due to its peculiarities - the unique possibility to examine the process of transformation from the former GDR to the new Laender as part of the FRG. Düring the course of the study it became evident that the common concept of transformation prevailing in social sciences, i.e. transformation as "delaved modernization" was not sufficient for an educational-scientific analysis, therefore the first step was to redefine the concept of transformation as well as the conception of civic and political education. This is followed by a presentation of exemplary findings resulting from working with the grid of criteria developed in the course of the research project "Educational Theory and School Instruction" funded by the German Research Association (DFG), a framework divided here into three complexes. For each of these complexes, the characteristics of civic and of political education are again initially defined. Finally, the results are summarized and an evaluation of the transformation process is attempted which seems to confirm the thesis initially posited that the transformation from civic education to political education presents a task never quite concluded.
