Abstract (English):The author starts from the assumption that, today, adolescents can orient themselves either toward a fast transition into adulthood or toward remaining in the phase of adolescence. Whereas the preference for transition is accompanied by a high esteem for school learning, those interested in staying in the phase of adolescence emphasize opportunities for development provided by leisure activities. By drawing on the concept of different types of adolescents and on the theory of motivational conflicts of action, the author argues that especially the combined preference for both orientations leads to problems in the realization of both school learning and leisure activities. The two behavioural preferences will compete with one another and this will have a negative impact on school learning, in particular, which in turn will lead to a less than average school achievement. This assumption is examined on the basis of a survey carried out among 7th- and 8th-graders and can be substantiated in its core. Adolescents with an equally high preference for both orientations consider both school learning and leisure activities similarly important, experience greater problems in the realization of both aims, and remain below average in their school achievement.
