Abstract (Englisch):At the beginning the author describes the education system of France as a historically developed secular shape of formerly two parts - the primary school, and the secondary education for elites only. Not until after World War II some combination between these two types of school came into being. Secondary school as a common core - grades 6 to 9 and a ramified system of upper secondary education for all young people following was legally established in 1989 and confirmed in 2005. As a socio-cultural characteristic of the current school system in France the right to enter higher education for all is conceived. In regard to the socio-economic context of the school system in France the baccalauréat plays an important role in the labour market. In the ensuing paragraphs the author works out the details of the contemporary French school system as follows: social position of the teaching profession, the role of the family, the organizational context and the governance of the current school system, financing, public versus private schooling, the general standards of the school education system, quality management, supporting systems, the general structure of school system in France, finally the teacher education and training. The author closes with some notes on the issue of the Islamic headscarf, the new Education Act and on higher education training. (DIPF/AS)
