Abstract (German): | Der Aufsatz bietet einen Überblick über Anlage und Ergebnisse der im Rahmen des Third International Mathematics and Science Study unter der Leitung von Harold W. Stevenson durchgeführten qualitativen Fallstudien der Schulsysteme Japans, der USA und Deutschlands. Abstract (English): | The author reviews three qualitative case studies on the national educational systems of Japan, the United States, and Germany, conducted as a component of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study under the direction of Harold W Stevenson. The studies provide a sound basis for a better understanding of the fundamental differencies in mathematics and science achievement between Japan and the two Western countries. While the comparative perspective remained implicit in the original publication of the country reports in three separate volumes, the article presents a comparative interpretation of findings focussed on three problem areas: 1. „The development and implementation of education standards". 2. „The interpretation of and institutional reactions to individual differences in ability and achievement". 3. „The role of schools in adolescents' lives".
