(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (Englisch):It is the task of schools to offer all children and adolescents equal opportunities for learning and development and to provide each individual student with optimal support. At the same time, schools are expected to compensate differences in students' learning prerequisites and to combat the emergence of disparities. Empirical studies have repeatedly shown that, in the case of immigrant students, schools' success in achieving these goals is limited. The present article summarizes the research literature on the role of students' immigration background for their school success, taking into account a number of student outcomes and levels of analysis. Starting from a model of distal and proximal determinants of learning and socialization in schools, the article discusses the current knowledge base on potential causes of immigrant students' disadvantages and on target points of intervention for reducing these disadvantages at the levels of society, school systems, contexts, schools or classrooms, individuals, and instruction or special support measures. The existing research is less than satisfactory, particularly with regard to the effectiveness of special support measures. (DIPF/Orig.)
