(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (English):This article is an introduction to the conceptual and statistical foundations of multiple classification models. Through careful assessment design, these models can be used to develop complex performance profiles of learners that provide detailed diagnostic feedback that is useful for the creation of remedial programs tailored to the needs of individual learners. In the first part of the article, core characteristics of the theoretical construct of 'competences' are reviewed, which are operationalized by these models. This is done specifically in light of the central role the notion of competence has played in the development of the national educational standards in Germany. In the second section, a classroom task on mathematical problem-solving is used to illustrate what can be learned from the input requirements of such models in large-scale assessment studies for the process of item development in general. In the third section, theoretical and practical advantages of such models are further illustrated with the DINA model. Finally, alternative models for cognitive diagnosis as well as challenges for their practical implementation are reviewed. (DIPF/Orig.)
