Abstract (English): | The author cntically comments two normative premises that guide the researchers' interpretation of results of their empirical study of mainstreaming elementary students who are diagnosed as needing special education: a) That decision to integrate these children in normal elementary classrooms is morally and politically legitimated and thus cannot be criticized on the basis of empirical findings, b) that social integration in normal classrooms should not preclude (an unspecified degree of) individuaiization. on the level of instructional goals. The paper closes with a short account of a study conducted about two decades ago seemingly almost forgotten in the present debate on educational integration. It is based on a largescale field experiment in which the instruction of special school students is strictly guides by the curriculum of the Hauptschule, i.e. an experiment aiming at integration on the level of educational and instructional goals thereby equalizing opportunities for further general or vocational education.
