Abstract (English): | Not only in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but also in the United Kingdom and in the United States, the future of teacher education is a matter for intensive discussion. On the basis of the debates on educational reform in the US and in GB, the major reform postulates and the reforms that have already been initiated are outlined: national standardization, an increasing orientation towards competency and towards educational practice in teacher education, as well as a functionalization of school reforms and of the reform of teacher education in the Service of national competitiveness. The trend is towards a training-on-the-job-model of teacher education in which the pedagogical theory is marginalized, the hope for an improvement of the schools through practice-oriented teacher education is exaggerated and the deprofessionalization of the teaching profession is accepted.
