(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (English):The author discusses "universal solidarity" as the central concept of pedagogical ethics which is committed to the needs of the coming generation and of the victims of society and of history. The attempt to give a precise description of this concept, still lacking in the present debate, points to the efforts by critical theory, especially by discourse ethics and its recognition-theoretical manifestation, to present a comprehensive picture of the moral sphere of modern society. Against this background, the author proposes to consider the "issue of solidarity" as follows: First, the provision of foundations for the universalization of solidarity exceeds the capacity of moral theory and, thus, leads to the definition of the relation between concrete welfare and formal justice. Second, the society- and institution-theoretical meaning of acts of solidarity is revealed only if these are interpreted as acts of personal commitment in favor of the other. (DIPF/Orig.)
