Abstract (English): | The author sketches the characteristics of the Japanese educational tradition and analyzes those conflicts which result from a confrontation between modern Western pedagogics and traditional education. Japanese principles of education and conceptions of the "self" differ from Western positions and produce effects which have until now not been taken into account. The author interprets the process of socialization in Japan as a process in which - in the course of the last decades - a specifically Japanese construction of the "self" has prevailed. This is paralleled by behavior in dependence ("amae") and in autonomy. The author comes to the conclusion that Japanese educational science and policy should better bear in mind these elements of the country's educational tradition. (DIPF/Orig.) |
