Abstract (English): | The authors sketch the major arguments and critical comments advanced in the discussion on school autonomy and link these with the debate on maintaining the quality of schooling. The question is raised which concept of quality plays a role in this and how quality can be ensured. The authors both discuss models of evaluation and report recent research results concerning teachers' attitudes regarding this issue. Finally, it is argued that, although autonomy may entail debureaucratization, it does not necessarily entail a withdrawal of the state; and the [authors] show how and why the concepts of market and competition in pedagogical contexts differ fundamentally from those employed in economic contexts.
