(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (English):The educational-political and scientific concept of life-long learning focuses on the adult from a biographically oriented developmental perspective, which, on the one hand, looks at contexts comprising different educational sectors and, on the other, takes into account the broad and rich variety of informal places of learning and learning practices. The authors substantiate the thesis that the dynamics of the related developments of adults can only be fully grasped by a theory of educational biographies which links the biography with the progress of learning via a time-related concept of the educational subject. Educational processes among adults are accordingly to be considered series of biographical moments. The methodological-methodical consequence of such an approach is to undertake qualitative longitudinal studies. In contrast to quantitative studies, these do not theoretically presuppose the continuity of life-long learning, thus becoming a methodical artifact; rather, they reconstruct the continuity of life-long learning, starting from the discontinuity of individually different educational processes. The authors illustrate the advantages of such a (new) research perspective by findings from a German Research Association [DFG] project on serial educational biographies. (DIPF/Orig.)
