(DIPF/Orig.) |
Abstract (English): | This article develops a theoretical framework for knowing and learning that (a) leads to the design of open-inquiry laboratory settings in high school physics and (b) necessitates ethnographic research methods to answer questions about knowing and learning in these settings. The theoretical framework is grounded in social constructivist approaches that may be indicated by the labels situated cognition, authentic learning situations and cognitive apprenticeship. An example is used to illustrate the ethnographic methods in the context of an open-inquiry physics laboratory. In the conclusions, that includes findings from other studies on open-inquiry, the affordances of open-inquiry and ethnographic methods and their consistency with the theoretical framework are assessed.
