| Abstract (German): | Der Hintergrund des Beitrags bildet ein unfangreiches empirisches Forschungsprojekt zu den spezifischen Folgen des Transformationsprozesses in den neuen Bundesländern für Frauen in bezug auf ihre Beteiligung an Weiterbildung, das unter der Leitung der Autorin an der Universität Heidelberg durchgeführt wurde. Im Mittelpunkt steht an dieser Stelle die Analyse der unterschiedlichen Motivkomplexe der umfangreichen Beteiligung an Weiterbildung sowie der geschlechtsspezifischen Weiterbildungsbarrieren. Zusammenfassend läst sich die Einstellung der Frauen zur Weiterbildung als eine Art Zweckoptimismus charakterisieren: Sie akzeptieren sowohl die individuelle als auch die gesellschaftliche Notwendigkeit von Weiterbildung. Sie nutzen letztere gezielt in der Hoffnung, damit ein wenig ihre im Vergleich zu Männern schlechtere Arbeitsmarktstiuation zu kompensieren, gleichzeitig wissend, daß die Weiterbildungsbemühungen nur sehr begrenzt ihre realen Beschäftigungschancen verbessern. | Abstract (English): | The article is based on a comprehensive empirical research project on the specific consequences of the process of transformation in the new Laender as regards women and their participation in further education. This project was conducted at the University of Heidelberg. The article focusses on the analysis of the different sets of motives leading to the comprehensive participation in further education as well as of the gender-related barriers to further education. In all, the women's attitude towards further education can be characterized as a kind of purposive optimism: they accept both the personal and the social need for further education. They use the latter specifically in the hope of improving, at least partially, their job situation, which is worse than that of men, knowing at the same time that the efforts of further education have but a limited effect on the actual chances of employment.
