| Abstract (Deutsch): | Dieser Beitrag diskutiert die mehr als hundertjährige Geschichte der Stahlstadt Gary, Indiana, in den Vereinigten Staaten. Da Garys Geschichte untrennbar mit der Blütezeit und dem Niedergang der Stahlindustrie in den USA verbunden ist, kann der Fall Gary als Symbol für das „"Zeitalter des Stahls" angesehen werden. Es ist eine Geschichte, die von Einwanderung, Segregation, Rassendiskriminierung, Arbeitslosigkeit, Armut und städtischem Verfall geprägt ist. Basierend auf Primär- und Sekundärquellen geht dieser Beitrag über das "Zeitalter des Stahls" hinaus in das postindustrielle Zeitalter und stellt Verbindungen zu Disziplinen wie Sozialpädagogik, Humangeographie und public history her. Es nutzt das Konzept des Social Imagineering, um eine sozial bewegte und engagierte Bildungsgeschichte zu fordern. (DIPF/Orig.) |
| Abstract (Englisch): | This article discusses the century-old history of the steel town of Gary, Indiana in the United States. As Gary's history is inextricably bound up with both the heyday and the decline of the steel industry in the United States, the case of Gary can be seen as emblematic of the "age of steel". It is a history marked by immigration, segregation, racial discrimination, joblessness, poverty, and urban decay. Based on primary and secondary sources, this paper moves beyond the "age of steel" to the post-industrial era and draws connections to disciplines such as social pedagogy, human geography, and public history. It uses the concept of Social Imagineering to call for a socially moved and engaged history of education. (DIPF/Orig.) |
