Abstract (English):Between 1910 and 1933, adult education in Germany succeeded in reaching a high theoretical Standard as a consequence of reflecting on its own task. But after the new beginnings in 1945 the old philosophical and pedagogical theories were no longer convincing and the new ones could not take root, so that from about 1960 onwards adult education began rather to take its bearings from the needs of the people and the labour market and thus became more dependent on the empirical social sciences. This change of direction, the "turning to realism" as it might be called, helped the adult-education movement to spread and expand but in doing so, it forfeited an ideal that could unite the great number of new activities. For the last few years there have been attempts at rethinking the matter but these can only prosper if adult education becomes aware of its own history. A survey of the important pedagogical concepts of adult education between 1910 and 1960 indicates affinities between the strong theoretical and philosophical commitment of the old adult-education movement and the newly defined tasks facing the totally threatened world of today.
