| Abstract (German): | Die zivilgesellschaftlichen, erziehungsstaatlich-diktatorischen und wohlfahrtstaatlichen Varianten öffentlich-staatlicher Bildungssysteme werden unter der Frage untersucht, ob Erziehung kann, was man von ihr erwartet, und ob sie darf, was sie soll (und vielleicht auch kann). Die Ordnungsmuster, Folgen und Wirkungen öffentlicher Erziehung, die man seit 1918 bis 2015 beobachten kann, werden als Probe auf die großen Versprechen gelesen, die diese Epoche kennzeichnen. Das Ergebnis ist Skepsis gegenüber der großen Rhetorik, zugleich aber der Versuch, die Leistung von Bildung als gesellschaftlich universaler Spezialfunktion jenseits der Emphase zu präzisieren. | Abstract (English): | Three models of public education systems that are characteristic for civil societies, dictatoral states and welfare states, are discussed in relation to the question of whether education can do what it is expected to do, and whether it is allowed to be what education should be and (maybe can be). The structure, implications and effects of public education, realised between 1918 and 2015, are read as a proof of the promises that characterised this period. The result is scepticism about the great rhetoric, but at the same time an attempt to clarify once and for all the power of education as a universal special function in modern societies.
