| Abstract (German): | Nordrhein-Westfalen ist das einzige Bundesland, in dem seit dem Schuljahr 2008/09 Eltern frei darüber entscheiden können, welche Grundschule ihr Kind besuchen soll. Die Autoren untersuchen die Determinanten der Entscheidung und die Folgen für die Zusammensetzung der Schülerschaft. Die Analyse zeigt, dass die Entfernung zur zuständigen Grundschule und die Übergangsquote auf das Gymnasium eine zentrale Rolle bei der Wahl spielen. Des Weiteren finden die Autoren heraus, dass die Auflösung der Grundschulbezirke zwar einen Einfluss auf die Wahlaktivität, aber keinen Einfluss auf die Veränderung der Zusammensetzung der Schülerschaft hat. Die ethnische Segregation an Grundschulen hat zwar für einzelne Gruppen zugenommen; sie ist jedoch von der Auflösung der Schulbezirke unabhängig. (DIPF/Orig.) |
| Abstract (English): | North Rhine-Westphalia is the only German federal state in which parents may choose a primary school for their children. The new rule was introduced in 2008/09. The authors analyze the determinants of choice and the consequences for the schools' ethnic composition. It turns out that the distance to the assigned school and the transfer rate to the academic track are important factors for explaining school choice. Moreover, the authors find an increase in school choice activity, but no effect on ethnic segregation. Although ethnic segregation increases over time in some types of communities, the effect appears to be unrelated to abolishing school catchment areas. (DIPF/Orig.) |
