| Abstract (German): | Während sich in England Vertragsschulen seit den 2010er Jahren etabliert haben, wurden Vertragsschulen in Neuseeland 2018 wieder abgeschafft. Der Beitrag analysiert die Gründe für die Expansion von Vertragsschulen in England und ihre Abschaffung in Neuseeland. Dabei wird die Rolle von politischen Parteien und Lehrkräfteverbänden als auch die Bedeutung von Ideen untersucht. In England ist ein Privatschulethos in den politischen Parteien weit verbreitet und die Lehrkräfteverbände vermochten es nicht, eine breite Front gegen die Einführung von Vertragsschulen zu mobilisieren. Neuseeland dagegen eint in der Parteienlandschaft das Bekenntnis zum Staat als Träger von öffentlich finanzierten Schulen und die Lehrkräfteverbände konnten ein breites Bündnis für die Abschaffung von Vertragsschulen formieren. | Abstract (English): | The article argues that partisan factors and the strength of teacher unions explain why England and New Zealand differ in their charter school politics. Whereas in England the expansion of academies and introduction of free schools became possible in the 2010s, New Zealand ceased to have charter schools in 2018. In England, a private school ethos is widespread in political parties and the teacher unions could form a bulwark against this ethos and the introduction of charter schools. In New Zealand, the majority of school politicians uphold the image of the importance of a public school system and the teacher unions were successful in forming an alliance for the abolition of charter schools.
