| Abstract (German): | Der Beitrag geht davon aus, daß in den USA Gewalterscheinungen in den Schulen (ähnlich wie in Deutschland) nichts Außergewöhnliches mehr sind - obwohl sie die Öffentlichkeit als bedrohlich wahrnimmt. Es wird betont: "Es ist unklar, was eigentlich unter 'Gewalt' verstanden werden soll. Zudem sind die (sozialen und politische) Verhältnisse in den USA und Deutschland nicht einfach vergleichbar." Der Autor berichtet über Informationsquellen verschiedener Art (politische Reports, Statistiken, Forschungsprojekte) und deren Bewertung. Er stellt diese in den historischen und sozialen Kontext und interpretiert sie "auf dem Hintergrund des spezifischen amerikanischen Bedürfnisses nach Sicherheit". (DIPF/Sch.) |
| Abstract (English): | Violence is in American schools as well known as in German schools. The American public, educators, teachers and parents are much concerned about violence, probably more than Germans are. But it is hard to get a true picture about the occurrence of violence in American schools. First the indicators about what is seen as violence are not clear, second there are social differences between the American and the German society in terms of violence. The author reports from different resources - public reports, official statistics, research projects - and their interpretation. He tries to put these data into their historic and social frame and gives some interpretation of how violence is regarded by Americans and how it relates to the requirement of safety in the American society.
