| Abstract (English): | This paper examines the reception of theory in educational science through an empirical analysis of key German academic journals. Drawing on both synchronic (2007–2016) and diachronic (1980–2019) data, we analyze which theories and theorists shape the discipline. Results show a strong reliance on external theoretical traditions, particularly philosophy and sociology, while educational science itself rarely appears as a theory-producing discipline. The diachronic analysis reveals a gradual decline in theoretical diversity. These findings raise critical questions about the field’s theoretical self-sufficiency and point to the need for a conscious strengthening of theory-building within educational science.
