Abstract (English): | Mass balancing oscillations (MBOs) can be considered the main feature in a specific biomechanical model for string instrument bowing. In this study, the prevalence of MBOs in a sample of adult professional orchestra violinists was recorded. Additionally, the potential of MBOs for reducing the risk of PRMDs was investigated. In the sample, 19 violinists showed a mean of 61.3% MBOs in repetitive movements at high tempi (MBOs/HT). A significant negative correlation between MBOs/HT and the occurrence of PRMDs was found (rpb = -.542, p = .016). Moreover, violinists with lower percentages of MBOs/HT suffered more intensely from PRMDs than did violinists with higher percentages of MBOs/HT (Kendall-Tau-b = -.499, p = .018). This dose-response relationship supports the presumption of a causal relationship. (DIPF/Orig.) |
