| Abstract (Sonst.): | Objetivo del estudio fue reconstruir históricamente el surgimiento, desarrollo y abandono del modelo bilingüe- bicultural en las escuelas públicas de sordos de Venezuela entre los años 1985 y 1996. Aunque ese proceso ha sido abordado anteriormente por algunas publicaciones académicas, todas se limitan a los puntos de vista de docentes vinculados al sector universitario. La novedad del presente artículo consistió en su reconstrucción a partir de testimonios directos de protagonistas del modelo que ocuparon en él roles diferentes: un directivo del sector educativo, una maestra, una madre de un niño sordo, una persona sorda que visitó la escuela durante la aplicación del modelo y un intérprete de lengua de señas venezolana (LSV). De acuerdo con ello, eran de esperar perspectivas nuevas que enriquecieran la actual comprensión del modelo. Efectivamente, en el análisis de los datos recolectados en entrevistas individuales contrasta el reducido alcance del modelo en lograr las transformaciones escolares pretendidas con su enorme impacto sobre las relaciones de poder de las lenguas implicadas: en el interior de la comunidad sorda, la LSV pasó de ser la variedad baja a convertirse en la variedad alta en relación con el español señado. Esto último implicó el empoderamiendo de la identidad Sorda, un cambio que se originó en el modelo, pero que lo trascendió más allá de su abandono en 1996. (DIPF/Orig.) |
| Abstract (Englisch): | The objective of the study was to reconstruct the emergence, development and abandonment of the bilingual-bicultural model in Venezuelan public schools for the deaf between 1985 and 1996. Although this process has been previously addressed by some academic publications, all of them are limited to the points of view of teachers linked to the university sector. The novelty of the present article consisted in its reconstruction based on the direct testimonies of protagonists of the model who occupied different roles in it: a manager of the educational sector, a teacher, a mother of a deaf child, a deaf person who visited the school during the application of the model, and a Venezuelan Sign Language (LSV) interpreter. Accordingly, new perspectives were expected to enrich the current understanding of the model. Indeed, the analysis of the data collected in individual interviews contrasts the limited scope of the model in achieving the intended school transformations with its enormous impact on the power relations of the languages involved: within the Deaf community, LSV went from being the low variety to becoming the high variety in relation to signed Spanish. The latter implied the empowerment of the Deaf identity. That change originated in the model, but transcended it beyond its abandonment in 1996. (DIPF/Orig.) |
